Sandbox
Break the equation. See what moves.
A mass on a spring is behind car suspension, skyscraper dampers and the click in your pen. Drag the mass, move the sliders, or rewrite the equation. Each slider lights up the part of the equation it changes.
About this sandbox
A mass on a spring with a damper, the same maths as car suspension and skyscraper dampers: m·x'' = -k·x - c·x' + F·cos(ωt). Every slider lights up the part of the equation it changes.
Things to try
- Turn the damping up until it stops bouncing: that is critical damping.
- Push it at its own rhythm and watch resonance build.
- Rewrite the equation with a stiffening spring.
